Tashi Norbu manifests Tibet in AmsterdamBorn with a genuine painting talent, Tashi Norbu (1974) works non-stop to preserve his imprint of the Tibetan culture, so dear to him, in contemporary art. Educated as a traditional Tibetan painter, Tashi ended up receiving teachings in the monastery of H.H. the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India. He wished though to decipher Western modern art as well. In Ghent Tashi studied Visual Arts at Sint Lucas Academie voor beeldende kunst (Sint Lucas Academy of Visual Arts), as part of a Higher Education study course on Science and Arts. During his four years long study course and while working in the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst - SMAK (Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art) in Ghent he was able to intimately admire and actually hold in his hands the most important expressions of contemporary art thanks to the guidance of Jan Hoet. In the meantime Tibetan Buddhist thangkas, mandalas and sutras inspire the political painting refugee Tashi Norbu as much as the expressionistic Art of Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. Both inspiration sources are intertwined by the artist in his monumental canvas, where Buddha or a reference to him are ever present. Tashi Norbu reflects the contemporary spirit of one world, one peace and individual responsibility for our modern culture in each work produced by his hand. He applies a collage technique typical of the Abstract Expressionism of the 50s, but he glues on his canvas such self absorbing elements that meditation becomes unavoidable while observing his work. It is not the new Yorker hellish society of Rauschenberg and Warhol but the silent equilibrium of Tibet and of H.H. the Dalai Lama that predominates Tashi Norbu’s work. Big canvas as high as 12 meter with Buddha or H.H. the Dalai Lama are easy for him to paint as a little painting for an altar. The truth that love constitutes the base of each form of art is obvious for Tashi Norbu and becomes unavoidable for us when we admire his work. Tashi Norbu manifesteert Tibet in AmsterdamGeboren met het ware schilders-talent werkt Tashi Norbu (1974) non-stop om zijn imprint van de Tibetaanse cultuur, die hem zo dierbaar is, te conserveren in eigentijdse kunst. Opgeleid als traditioneel Tibetaans schilder kreeg hij uiteindelijk les in het klooster van de Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India. Maar hij wilde ook de westerse hedendaagse kunst doorgronden. In Gent studeerde Tashi Norbu daartoe aan de Sint Lucas academie voor beeldende kunst, onderdeel van de Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst. Tijdens zijn vier jaar opleiding en daarna werkte hij in het Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK) in Gent en kreeg daar onder leiding van Jan Hoet heel intiem alle belangrijkste hedendaagse kunst onder ogen en letterlijk in handen. Intussen inspireren Tibetaans boeddhistische thangka's, mandala's en soetra's de schilderende politieke vluchteling Tashi Norbu evenzeer als de expressionistische kunst van Robert Rauschenberg en Andy Warhol. Beide inspiraties brengt hij in feite samen in zijn monumentale doeken, waarin de Boeddha of een verwijzing hem nooit ontbreken. Tashi Norbu weerspiegelt de tegenwoordige geest van één wereld, één vrede en individuele verantwoordelijkheid voor onze huidige cultuur in elk werk van zijn hand. Hij gebruikt de collage-techniek van het Abstract Expressionisme uit de jaren vijftig, maar plakt daar zulke innerlijk verstillende elementen tegenaan, dat bij het kijken naar zijn werk meditatie onvermijdelijk wordt. Niet de helse samenleving van New York, waar Rauschenberg en Warhol naar verwijzen, maar de stille evenwichtigheid van Tibet en de Dalai Lama voeren uiteindelijk de boventoon in het werk van Tashi Norbu. Op Info/Video Archive kan je de Tibetaanse Kunst 2008 video bekijken, geproduceerd door het magazine Happinez, om er live het schilderstalent van Tashi Norbu te bewonderen. Grote doeken tot twaalf meter hoog met de Boeddha of de Dalai Lama gaan hem even gemakkelijk af als een doekje voor op het altaar. De waarheid dat liefde aan alle kunst ten grondslag ligt, is voor Tashi Norbu vanzelfsprekend en wordt voor ons onontkoombaar als we naar zijn werk kijken. In Nederland zijn de schilderijen van Tashi Norbu doorlopend te zien in Pakhuis De Boterton.
